machines, monsters and movement.

started the night at the Lo-Fi for a peak of “The Weird Machine” by Numskull, and no surprises there. Bold lines, solid colours and mashups of well known movie and comic characters were hung among the room, with a cool installation at the further end of the room, a weird machine as if it had blown in through the window.

after sussing out numskull, we ventured around the corner to the Monster Children Gallery to look at some pretty sick artworks. some of the works i loved was a figure of a girl on a sheet of metal, looked as if we were looking at her through thick fog or mist, or she was a ghost. next to her was a canvas of a “Joker”-like figure wearing a Fedora-styled hat. was creepy but oh so intriguing. there was also a pop-out sort of work of a lady standing in the woods with a UFO in the background and her hand down her pants.

after soaking in that work, we finally went off to the Ambush Gallery where the work from the Changing Lanes Festival was on show, plus other artworks by the featured artists. it was awesome, beside the fact they only had wine left..

was a great vibe and atmosphere last night, good work to all who participated

next week there’s Yimmy Yayo’s ‘Untitled and Unrelated’ photography show at the Lo-Fi, as well as the huge Art Exhibition at the Hordern Pavillion.

haven’t been home in a while and can’t remember what came first.. ah yes, on the 7th we had Paste Modernism at the Lo-fi and holy swiss cheese, it was AWESOME. so many different styles and artists, massive crowd and chillin tunes. only down side was the fact they ran out of free booze 20min in! i took a fair few photos but i’ll only post up a few, and put the rest up on my flickr account

the night progressed well into the night and ended with burritos. could you ask for a better night?

then there was the exhibition at the Red Bull Gallery where artists Remo, Meggs and Adam McLevey had works. the weather went from warm and sunny to warm, rainy and windy, but nevetheless the night went on!

i think i’ll leave it here for now, but next time i’ll upload and give a brief overview of the Grill’d/Secret Wars event where Sprinkles and Houl had a go at each other on the infamous white wall.

man, the stuff that must go on inside their heads!! well, Thomas sort of showed us, labelling certain details in his works which was pretty cool. two one’s stuff was just awesome all round

there were some models in bikinis at the lo-fi themselves, (i’m assuming the ones used for the exhibition) and men and women alike were lining up to get a shot with them. unfortunately i didn’t get a shot with them (came straight from work and i’d have looked like a zombie from Dawn of the Dead next to them!)

Now, tonight there are a couple of shows on. At the Lo-Fi we got Attic Antics by Two One and Thomas Jackson and at the Ambush Gallery we’ve got the Final Episode Launch party.

i arrived early in the night, which is an advantage as you get to take a good look before the crowd takes over.

the first thing you see when you walk in is the wall, and excuse the french but FUCK it was amazing. wish i had a better camera to take a better photo!

i find the drips give the painting another level, and the metallic paint just makes the piece that little bit more intriguing and eye-catching.

meggs’ typography is also pretty neat, and really loved his use of stencils and layers in his works. i didn’t take many photos but the below works totally remind me of The Terminator.

this week we’ve got two exciting events, one with the Ambush gallery and another at the Lo-Fi.

Friday is the launch of the Everfresh Blackbook at the Ambush gallery. The book has works from the Everfresh Crew- Sync, Phibs, Reka, Rone, Wonderlust, Prizm, Meggs, Makatron and The Tooth. be sure to make an appearance as i’ve got a feeling that friday is going to go off!!

don’t miss out and buy a copy of the book, either here or on the night.

Saturday holds Ears’ solo show at the Lo-Fi. get a good insight to his work and see what the man is about. the event page is http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=123742337675206&ref=ts.

Almost forgot! if you’re around the city in Sydney, be sure to take a look at the works that are on display in the HSBC building and around the entrance to Town Hall station near the Pavillion. The Places In-Between is taking a hold of the city, injecting some colour into the otherwise dull area. artists such as Phibs, Bridge Stehli and Beastman are featured, plus Jumbo’s huge cubes are in the food court!

however, last friday i attended the Project 5 event that was being held at Cockle Bay where Meggs, webuyyourkids, Ears and Anthony Lister painted live. the music was pumping and the crowd was great, not to mention the awesome artworks that were going under way

i really loved meggs’ style, it looked like a stencil was used for the centre piece and then free hand beyond. not sure if a stencil was used, but still looked amazing. loved the use of colour as well

unfortunately i didn’t get to stay long enough to see the final product by webuyyourkids but it definitely looked like an interesting way to start a piece.

i was pretty amazed at the detail and technique Ears used, which was so precise yet messy at the same time. also intrigued to see how this piece went

anthony’s piece was also a stunner! a similar yet different style to ears, with a great use of colour.

coming up this saturday is Phib’s exhibition, An Exhibition of Aerosol Works, at Westsyde in Dulwich Hill from 2-7pm but i will unfortunately not be able to make it!

Last night was the grand finals for the Secret Wars competition in Sydney, where Creon and Houl stepped up on the stage at Church on Chalmers to wield black markers and paint once more to gain the title of Winner of Secret Wars Sydney, winning a bike, $1000 and some other goodies.

I got there pretty early, around 6.45 and it was fairly emtpy, but knew it would be packed out once the artists start their thing, and hit 8pm- people started pouring in!

the beginning of the night was nice and relaxed, but the atmosphere still buzzing and a slideshow of all the previous rounds above the stage and wall getting everyone psyched for the big night.

There was a pretty groovy band (that i didn’t manage to grab the name of- sorry!) to kick things off, and then a strange set played by the DJ upstairs, but once you had a couple of drinks and mingled a little bit, you took no notice of and just enjoyed yourself.

in true Secret Wars style, everyone counted down from ten to start the 90mins of action.

there were freebies once more, with some awesome magazines, shirts and bottle openers (which i managed to score one of- yay!)

and again, in Secret Wars style, we counted down the last 10seconds.

we had the thank you speech by the great man, Shannon, and just once more a big huge thank you to him for getting it all together!

then was the moment of truth. two judges, ben frost and luca ionescu, came up on stage. Ben frost was first, and voted for Creon. Luca voted for… Houl. it was all up to the crowd…

out came the decibel reader and the crowd was given the chance to shout and cheer for either houl or creon.

first was Houl, and when i say the crowd went nuts- the crowd was like a stampede of elephants after a bag of peanuts.

then was creon’s supporters- once again, the audience went CRAZY.

Shannon wrote the measurements on the clipboard, and all was revealed.

HOUL HAD WON- by 0.1 of a decibel!!!!!!!!!!! that was insane!!!

although i left pretty soon after the winner being announced, i’m sure celebrations went on long through the night.

Congrats to Houl and all the other competitors, you all did a fantastic job!!

But like i said, the war is not over yet!! Secret Wars plans to head to Melbourne next up, so if you’re visiting melbourne within the coming months, be sure to keep up to date by visiting the secret wars website
